The Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria (CWON) has a rich history rooted in the post–Vatican II awakening of the laity and the growing recognition of women’s role in the life and mission of the Church. Its emergence reflects a deliberate effort by the Catholic hierarchy and committed laywomen to provide a unified platform through which Catholic women could deepen their faith, strengthen family life, and contribute meaningfully to national development. Origins and Establishment Although informal associations of Catholic women existed in various dioceses prior to the 1960s, these efforts were largely localized and uncoordinated. The need for a structured, national body became evident during consultations among Church leaders and women’s groups in the early 1960s. These discussions culminated in the historic first inauguration of the Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria on 5 May 1964 at the Onitsha Archdiocese, under the leadership of His Grace, Archbishop Charles Heerey. Following this landmark event, sustained efforts were made to harmonize diocesan initiatives and establish a national framework. By 1965, preparatory work for a national conference in Enugu had been completed, leading to the consolidation of CWON as the official umbrella body for all Catholic women in Nigeria. This formal establishment provided a unified voice and direction for Catholic women across the country. Structure and Mission CWON operates as the recognized national organization of Catholic women in Nigeria and functions as an affiliate of the World Union of Catholic Women Organizations (WUCWO). Its structure is deliberately comprehensive, spanning multiple levels—international, national, provincial, diocesan, deanery, parish, and out-station—thereby ensuring inclusivity, effective coordination, and grassroots participation. The mission of CWON is anchored in uniting Catholic women for spiritual growth and active evangelization, promoting Christian family values, and contributing to the moral and social transformation of society. Inspired by the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, CWON emphasizes service, humility, faithfulness, and commitment to the teachings of the Church. Key Figures and Institutional Growth The growth and consolidation of CWON were driven by visionary and dedicated leaders. Among the most notable is Dr. Mrs. V. V. I. Okoye, widely acknowledged as a foundational figure in the organization’s history. Her leadership extended beyond national boundaries, as she became the first National President of CWON elected to the Board of WUCWO, thereby positioning Nigerian Catholic women on the global stage. Over the years, several CWON leaders have continued this legacy of international engagement, serving in various capacities within WUCWO and strengthening Nigeria’s influence in global Catholic women’s movements. Activities and Areas of Focus CWON’s activities are firmly grounded in spiritual formation, with a strong emphasis on Christian education, unity, and a deeper appreciation of Church life and doctrine. Beyond spirituality, the organization is actively involved in charitable and social interventions, including support for the vulnerable, promotion of peace and justice, and advocacy on issues affecting women and families, such as domestic violence and moral decline. Central to CWON’s work is the promotion of the family as the “domestic church,” recognizing it as the foundation of both Church and society. In line with its global affiliation, CWON adopts and implements themes from WUCWO, such as “Catholic Women: Carriers of Living Water to a World that Thirsts for Peace,” translating these themes into concrete programs and initiatives that address contemporary societal challenges. Through its structured organization, strong leadership, and unwavering commitment to faith and service, CWON has continued to play a vital role in the spiritual, social, and moral development of women, families, and communities across Nigeria.
